Video tutorial showing a scroll saw project from start to finish.

Now that I have more time to work on the blog I want to start producing more tutorial videos. My goal is to get one video out each week. We will see if I can stick to that schedule but at least it's a goal.

I plan to do a few different types of videos. This one will be what I am calling a project video. I will be selecting one of the free patterns in my catalog and show all the steps to make the project. Although it will show the project being made the video is more of a learning tool to show the basics up to more advanced techniques. I will add new skills to future videos.

This video is long and very detailed. If you are new to the hobby I truly believe watching these videos will give you everything you need to become proficient with the scroll saw.

Keep in mind that this is a pattern that was previously posted on the blog. It has been in the catalog for a while. I simply selected this pattern for this video. If you want to make this project after you watch the video you can download it at this link.

If you look through the catalog and see a pattern you would like to see cut in one of these videos then send me an email with the file name of the pattern and I'll consider it for a future video.

A beautiful Mother's Day pattern from Sheila Landry Designs.

http://www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/free-pattern
Hi folks, I wanted to pass along that Sheila Landry Designs has a great free pattern for Mom available to download. With Mother's Day fast approaching this would make a nice gift with a special message. While you are there make sure you check out all the incredible patterns they have to offer.

If you have been with my blog for long you know what I think about Sheila and Keith. Together they have created a treasure trove of patterns that boggles the mind.

The hobby of scrolling is not like scrap booking or sewing. Those hobbies have thousands of retailers selling patterns and supplies. Our hobby is limited to only a few stores either online or offline that cater to our needs. Because of this we desperately need to support those few businesses we love.

Sheila Landry designs is one of those businesses that have supported the hobby for years. When you purchase a pattern from Sheila Landry Designs not only are you getting a great pattern you are supporting the hobby.

If you are new to the hobby get ready to have your mind blown when you visit Sheila Landry Designs. Stop right now and visit their website.

Cameo Box. Intermediate scroll saw pattern.

I am sometimes asked if I could do more advanced projects. Because I produce so many patterns I have often been limited to basic level patterns. It's just a matter of time.

Now that I am retired time is not as much of an issue. I will occasionally try to step up the difficulty just a little. I probably won't do many advanced level patterns. They can take days to design and build. I hope this gives more readers useful patterns.

This Cameo Box would be considered at the low end of intermediate level. The construction of the inner box is just butt joints. There are no hinges to worry with. What makes this a little more difficult than my normal patterns is the amount of fretwork decoration. You will also need to source 1/8" stock for the fretwork overlays. The box is 1/4" thick stock. Obviously you need nice contrast between the box and the fretwork. I used Peruvian walnut for the box. The fretwork is just poplar. Poplar is so white that it made for great contrast. We are not so worried about wood grain in the fretwork. We just need the white color

This is also a great project to practice stack cutting. The lid and bottom can be stack cut as we as the fretwork.

I would suggest you use a #3 scroll reverse blade for the fretwork. The interior cuts are not tiny but some will be tough to cut with a #5 or larger blade.

I hope you enjoy this pattern. I think it would make a nice Mother's Day gift.

Smart Phone Stand Scroll Saw Pattern

This smart phone stand should work with a variety of brands. I tested it with the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus. A phone as large as the 6 plus makes the stand just a little top heavy but it works. The small iPhone is the perfect size.

It is cut from 1/4" wood. The slots that connect the two parts needs to be cut to match the thickness of the wood. If you wood is a little off from 1/4" then adjust as necessary.

I included a blank back to the pattern so you can easily add your own design. You could use a stencil font to customize with a name for instance. Just use your imagination.

The following video is a shameless plug showing the construction of my scroll saw vases. It shows just how easy it is to make these beautiful pieces of art. I currently have two books available. Each has 8 different vase designs. I show different techniques for the ornamentation including fretwork, pyrography,  polymer clay inlay and wood overlay. Each book is $12 and you can download it immediately after purchase. I use secure Paypal checkout to accept credit cards. You do not need a Paypal account to make the purchase.

If you would like to have the books but do not want to buy online then you can pay by check or cash. Just send me an email and I will email you back with details how to order. steve@stevedgood.com
The books are digital only. No printed version is available. It's just too expensive to print and I want to keep the price low.

World's Greatest Mom and Dad scroll saw pattern.

-

There are a couple special day's coming up. Celebrate you Mother and Father with these eight inch wide word art patterns. If you cut them from 3/4" thick wood they are free standing.

I had another email question today about where to get scroll saw ready boards. I know it's difficult to buy thin boards locally. Most big box stores only have 3/4" thick boards. Here are a few suggestions.

Home Depot sells a small selections of craft boards. They usually have Oak and Poplar. They will come in 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" thick thicknesses. You have to look closely because it is a small display.

If you are in a part of the country with a Menards hardware/home store. They sell a few species of boards in 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" thicknesses. There prices are also reasonable. Kind of.

Look in your phone book for a local Hardwood Specialist or mill. Some of these will demension the lumber they sell for an added fee. These are the best for selection of species and cost.

One popular online hardwood re-seller is Ocooch at http://www.ocoochhardwoods.com/ . They have a nice selection of species and different thicknesses and widths. Ocooch has been around for a while and generally get good comments about service. Keep in mind that when you buy online you don't get to look at the boards. Not every board will be perfect. A place like Ocooch does a pretty good job with quality. There are a few other online hardwood re-sellers that you can find with a google search. Make sure you check the shipping charges. The packages are heavy. The shipping can get expensive.

Buying online from Ebay.com has worked well for me. There are a few sellers of scroll saw ready boards. Just search for "thin boards" and you will get a bunch of hits.
The boards will usually be cut to fit into one of the USPS shipping boxes. This means that the length will be just under 12" and the widths will vary. Read the description closely. I have purchased these from ebay seller Mainehardwood. I purchased 10 boards of 1/2" X 6" X 12" dimensions from Mainehardwoods a few weeks ago for 39.95 with free shipping. The box arrived quick and included what I ordered. I mixed two species. Cherry and maple. The cherry boards were perfect but the maple had cupped a little. They are still usable but not for every project. That's going to happen sometimes. Wood moves with the weather.

Another option is to use Baltic Birch plywood. It is a high grade ply that many scrollers use. It is fine for some projects. It's not as pretty has hardwoods. You can find BB plywood online also. Places like Sloans Woodshop are reliable sources. Ocooch also sells BB ply. I have even seen it for sale on Amazon. You can buy BB ply in different thicknesses.

Now for the best but most expensive upfront option. Buy lumber in the rough from a local mill and dimension the boards yourself. If you are lucky enough to have a well tooled workshop then milling the lumber is pretty easy. A complete set up would include a Jointer, table saw, band saw and planner. I have spent years buying and upgrading these tools for my shop. You can get by with just a table saw and planner but you will have to make some compromises. I would buy them in this order. Table saw, planner, band saw then the jointer.

I know there is a lot of information here and I left some things out. If there is interest I can do a video showing the complete process to mill a board to scroll saw ready.

More Funny Word Art Scroll Saw Patterns.

Here are a few more word art patterns for those of you who enjoy them. I always get a lot of comments when I post word art. It seems there are two thoughts. You either love them or think they are silly. I have a strange sense of humor. I think the Upside Down pattern is funny but I'm sure my wife would roll her eyes.

I still get questions about how to access my patterns.  Just a reminder that all 1700+ patterns are available in my free online catalog. To find the catalog just visit the blog. The link to the catalog is near the top of the page. When you get to the catalog you can search by keyword or just flip through the pages.

Stop the glue bottle shake!

We all know how frustrating glue bottles can be. If you sit them on their bottom the glue settles and makes it difficult to get the glue started next time you need it. It also allows air in the tip. The air causes the glue to dry and clog.

The solutions is to store them tip down. This holder will sit on your workbench and hold the bottle so it is ready to use.

You could obviously make this a very simple design and it would function fine. We are scrollers so we can add a little pizazz. I added a little graphic to the legs and 1/4" dowels to pin the legs.

After I made this prototype I decided it was a little too tall so the final design is 1/2" shorter.

I wanted to mention that I finally have the RapidResizer tool working again. If you have not used this tool before let me explain what it is. Patrick Roberts over at http://online.rapidresizer.com/allows readers of my blog to use his wonderful service for free. His service is used to resize patterns. It has a ton of features and is a great service. You can resize by percentag, change the outline to red, use save ink features and more.

To use the service for free it has to be a pattern you downloaded from my blog. If you want to resize other patterns there is a small fee.

The link to this service is on the left column of my blog. The image below is what you need to look for.

To get it working again I had to change the way it opens. It now opens in a separate page but the interface is the same after it opens.

I will make another video showing how it works once I get time. The old video tutorial is now out of date and needs updating.

Executive Business Card Holder Scroll Saw Pattern.

Executives like their golf. Make this easy business card holder with a golf ball and some scrap wood.

It's been a while since I added up the stats from my blog. I have been posting patterns since May 1st 2007. In 3272 days of blogging I have posted 2605 times. That's a post every 1.3 days for nearly 9 years. I have uploaded 1731 free patterns. Those patterns have been downloaded an amazing 39,396,724 times. The blog has been visited 8,300,528 times.

My email newsletter goes out to 21,100 subscribers.

My Youtube channel has 20,230 subscribers with 8,454,998 video views. That's pretty good for a fat ugly guy. I do have a face for radio though.

I'm not bragging, well maybe a little. I mention these stats to say thank you for what you have done for me.

On May 1st 2007 I was out of town doing training for my job. I was not in a very good state of mind. Work was becoming stressful for me and I was just not happy. That night, sitting in my hotel room I decided to start a blog. I just wanted something to keep me busy and take my mind off things.

I had been a woodworker for several years and a computer geek since 1979. I had at least average skills in both hobbies. That was how I decided to start a blog in woodworking. I knew I didn't want to do traditional woodworking so I limited the blog to scroll sawing. My plan was for the blog to be a place where I could teach pattern making. I quickly figured out that most people just wanted new patterns they could download and build. The image below was the first pattern I posted.

I was surprised that a few people showed up and downloaded the pattern. That first year my patterns were downloaded a little over 42,000 times. I thought that was amazing. I really never expected much from the blog. In year three there were more than 3 million downloads. That's when I thought maybe I could keep it going.

Here I am today. I am having more fun with the blog than ever. I'm retired from my career and able to spend more time on the blog. Hopefully that extra time will improve the blog over time.

To end this long post I just want to say thank you again to all the people who have supported the blog with their donations, buying my DVD's/books and subscribing. I will try my best to make sure your support gets put to good use.

Horse's Butt Trophy Scroll Saw Pattern.

You might want to be careful who you give this trophy to. I know it would feel good to make this for your boss but that may be a deciding moment in your career.

It would probably be more appropriate for that one relative who shows up at the family reunion in a leased Corvette wearing counterfeit leather shoes. You know, the guy with the $35 comb over toupee.
Wearing half a bottle of Old Spice and a gold plated chain. He usually brings his new girl friend every year who is at least a generation younger than him. Yea that guy.
